Plan the rail journey
Search from Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino to the first village you intend to visit, checking changes and the final journey home. Peak trains can be crowded, so leave boarding time and confirm ticket and validation rules.
How many villages in one day
Attempting all five can leave little time in each. From Santa Margherita, two or three villages provide a more balanced trip. Local boats may offer a scenic transfer when operating, but should not be the only return plan.
Cinque Terre trails can require tickets and may close. Check the National Park before adding a walk between villages.
Travel with a lighter footprint
Start early, carry water and keep luggage small. Respect residents, signed routes and waste rules. If weather or crowding makes the plan unsuitable, closer alternatives include Sestri Levante, Camogli and Rapallo.

No. Trains are generally the practical way to reach and move between the villages.
Can I see all five villages in a day?
It is possible to pass through them, but two or three stops create a less rushed day from Santa Margherita.
